Daniel Lopez Jr., 80-year-old widower, passed away peacefully on Friday night, September 13, 2019 at a local hospital with his caring sister, Carmen “Nena” Lopez by his side. He was born in Laredo, Texas.
Tete as he was affectionally known by family members and close friends was the owner of La Superior Bakery, which was started by his father the late Daniel Lopez Sr. in the old Azteca neighborhood in early 1940’s. He attended Laredo Martin High School and was an active boxer participating in the Golden Gloves competition in his early youth. He was raised and worked in the family bakery business with his father and other siblings. He went to work in Houston as a welder and a draftsman and returned to Laredo to continue the tradition of the “Best Semita in Town” when he bought the bakery business when his father retired. He continued the tradition in Laredo until 2015 when he developed health issues and he leased the place to another bakery.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Daniel Moreno Lopez and Carmen Contreras; former wife, Ana Maria Garza; brother, Ruben Dario Lopez.
Mr. Lopez is survived by his son, Daniel Lopez, III; siblings, Irma Mendiola, Rosa Maria Briseño, Carmen “Nena” Lopez, and Yolanda Cardona. He is also survived various nephews and nieces, cousins and other siblings and family members.
A prayer service will be held on Thursday, September 19, 2019 at 7:00 p.m. in the Gamez & Sons Funeral Home Chapel. Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, September 20, 2019 at 9:30 a.m. in the funeral home chapel. Interment will follow immediately at the Calvary Catholic Cemetery. Funeral home opens at 7:00 a.m.
